Charles the Bold and Margaret of York chose Damme as their wedding location 550 years ago. The ‘golden’ wedding was held in the house of the reeve in Jacob van Maerlantstraat in the early morning of 3 July 1468. The choice in favour of Damme is remarkable to say the least. After all, the former harbour town had to eat humble pie in the 15th century in respect of the larger city of Bruges and nearby Sluis. Did the couple choose Damme for peace and quiet? The atmosphere? The beautiful buildings, like the town hall, completed in Brabant Gothic only a year earlier? The question will probably always remain unanswered.
