Winter in Damme traditionally goes hand in hand with the influx of large numbers of winter geese that touch down here and spend the winter with us.
Winter geese is the popular name for various species of Arctic geese that come to the polders around Damme in freezing weather. In fact they are Colt Geese, and Small Reed Geese.
For some years now, some geese have had neck rings with a unique number and letter code. This makes it possible to recognise individual animals and enables scientists to learn more about migratory movements and stopping places, age and family relationships.
